The Role of a Committee Member


Preamble

The Caucus of the Newtown Democratic Party is the core authority for
all work of the Party in our Town. The By-Laws of the Newtown
Democratic Party are approved by the Caucus. These By-Laws in turn
create the Newtown Democratic Town Committee (NDTC) as a creature of
the Caucus to conduct the party's business.

Purpose

The purpose of this job description is to clarify the responsibilities
and duties expected of a Member of the NDTC. There should be no
confusion or misunderstanding on the part of Members as to what their duties are.

Job description

Each Member is expected to:


  • Attend Party events and functions
  • Aid the Party's fundraising with a contribution no matter how small
  • Attend all monthly meetings of the NDTC (or to seek an excused absence)
  • Keep current on all issues facing the Town and our Party
  • Be prepared to stuff envelopes, lick stamps and make phone calls on behalf of the Party and its candidates.
  • Attend meetings of Town Boards and Commissions to understand the issues, personalities, our opposition and the
    performance of our own people.

  • Make their yearly voluntary contribution

This is not a debating society or a social club. It is the working
"board of directors" and management team for a political party
conducting the business of our more-than 10,000 constituents. They
expect your intelligence, talents and time to be invested in this
mission.

Committee Service

In addition, each Member of the NDTC is expected to serve on at least one standing
committee or to serve as an Officer of the NDTC. The current committees are:


  • Candidates Committee
  • Membership/Delegates Committee 
  • Program-Issues Committee
  • Ways & Means Committee
  • Campaign Committee                              
  • Voter Services/ Computer Committee
  • By-Laws Committee
  • Platform Committee

In addition, the Party's leaders may ask any member to take on
additional responsibilities as needed.


Voluntary Contribution

Each Member of the NDTC is expected to
make a yearly voluntary contribution to aid with the administrative and
operational overhead costs of the Committee. Presently the minimum
amount is set at $75.00


Mission of the NDTC

The mission of the NDTC and its members is to:


  • Lead the NDTC and the Party's members in all Party endeavors.
  • Take positions on issues of importance to the Party.
  • Identify, recruit, nominate and elect the best candidates for both Party and town offices.
  • Be strong watchdogs of issues and officeholders to insure our principles and interests are being pursued.
  • Promote the Party.
  • Recruit new people to become Democrats.
  • Raise money for the Party and its candidates.
  • Be active in all party endeavors

None of these individual activities is easy; all of them together add up to
an important and difficult mission, which requires your involvement.
